This is a binary with repeated outbursts that are very short (approximately 1 day). Although near the Galactic center, infrared observations of its companion indicate that it is a foreground source. Its x-ray spectrum is reminiscent of x-ray pulsars, but no pulse has yet been found. The companion appears in the K band to be an O7 star, without the emission lines expected from a Be binary. The system is nearby (1-2 kpc) yet was not discovered until 1997, probably due to the anomalously short duration of its outbursts. It is therefore likely that this is the first of a new class of systems waiting to be discovered throughout the Galaxy. Newton will provide a deep search for pulsations and a sensitive spectrum of the quiescent emission.
