X-ray groups of galaxies provide a link between the most massive virialized systems in the Universe and the field, where majority of matter resides. Studies of groups open prospects to understand the galaxy formation, presently one of the most challenging astrophysical issues. We propose to observe a flux-limited sample of groups from the cross-correlation of the optical group catalogs with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data and screened to provide robust results given the knowledge on the XMM intrumental background.
