We propose to image the optical jet emanating from the young stellar object L1551 IRS5 over a period of three cycles. Using two narrow band filters sensitive to high- and low-excitation shocks respectively and two wide-band filters sensitive to line-emission and dust scattering respectively, we aim to study the time evolution of small scale structures within this object. Ground based observations have already detected the time scale for evolution of this object. HST is going to provide the level of detail necessary for a direct comparison with {existing} hydrodynamical models. Our data will resolve the smallest features observed {optically} so far in an astrophysical jet, and also detect their time evolution.
