Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) have been found in every globularcluster in which an appropriate search has been made. However, details on their nature still are sparse. In particular, nothing is known about their rotation rates and kinematicproperties, diagnostics which are crucial in investigatingscenarios for their formation and evolutionary histories. Wepropose to use the GHRS to obtain spectra of the threebrightest BSS in 47 Tuc. Analysis of a strong Mg II resonancedoublet will allow precise estimates of both the rotationrates and radial velocities of these BSS. Theories of BSSformation involving mergers predict that, at least initially, the merged star should be rotating very rapidly. On the otherhand, there could exist efficient mechanisms to remove angularmomentum and spin down the stars. Measurements of rotationrates will distinguish between these extremes. Precise radialvelocities will reveal if dynamical interactions have takenplace and if a significant fraction of BSS reside inspectroscopic binaries.
