We propose to utilize the unmatched angular resolution in thevisual of the astrometer FGS, in an attempt to measure SIZESand SHAPES of Miras variables and their variations with thepulsation phase. In particular, it would be possible, for thefirst time, to cover the full 4div6 (average) magnitude rangeof a pulsation cycle with the same instrument and with afairly high signal--to--noise throughout. The scientificreturn is potentially very rewarding. Mapping the variationsof Mira diameters is of key importance for the detailedunderstanding of their pulsation mechanism, and ultimately, for the use of Miras as galactic and extragalactic distanceindicators. Also, confirmation of elliptical projected diskswould set constraints on the existence and relevance of non-radial pulsations. The programme is particularly suited forthe FGS, the only orbiting interferometer. It requires, together, all of those outstanding characteristics, highangular resolution, large dynamical range, and faint (for aninterferometer) magnitude limit, which make this wide--bandvisual interferometer unique compared to ground basedfacilities.
