We propose observations of the Io plasma torus in coordinationwith the Galileo spacecraft. The requested GHRS scans arescientifically useful in and of themselves, and provide dataessential to the correct interpretation of the Galileoresults. The combined data set is significantly more powerfulthan either alone. The observations will provide the mostcomprehensive three-dimensional description of the plasma todate, yielding ion composition, electron density andtemperature as functions of radius, magnetic longitude, andlocal time. Such a data set is capable of addressing majorissues in Jupiter/Io science: What powers the intense torusemissions? What processes shape the Io torus? Where does massenter the torus, and how is mass transported? In addition toGalileo and HST data, team members will oversee a thoroughprogram of supporting EUVE and groundbased observations.
