We propose to continue spectroscopic measurements of Jupiter to study the development of the atmosphere following the impacts of the Shoemaker Levy 9 fragments. Observations with the FOS during the week of the impact revealed large changes to the chemical composition of the atmosphere at the impact sites. The regions of the Jovian atmosphere perturbed by the impacts should undergo dynamical evolution in the form of latitudinal spreading and chemical evolution initiated by photolysis of the newly formed species. We will observe these changes by measuring the chemical abundances at the impact latitude as a function of time. We will, for the first time, determine the correlation between gas and aerosols in the perturbed atmosphere. This program will result in an improved knowledge of the characteristics of the impacts, the rate of vertical and meridional transport in the Jovian atmosphere, and the nature of sulfur chemistry in the Jovian atmosphere.
