We propose to observe both components of the bright double QSO HE 1104-1805 (z=2.303, d=3 arcsec) with the FOS at high S/N in the wavelength range from 2430 to 3270 Angstrom with the aim to measure for the first time both number densities and lateral dimensions of Ly Alpha forest clouds in the yet unexplored range 1<=z<=1.6 for which this QSO is a unique target. A further aim is to measure CNO abundances and ionization conditions (radiative or collisional?) in several high-ionization absorption line systems in two different lines of sight of each cloud. In addition, the z=1.66 damped Ly Alpha system in component A (not damped in B) offers the possibility to resolve geometrically an early galaxy by two different lines of sight: one passing through disk plus Halo (A) the other only through Halo (B). UV spectra are necessary for this part in order to observe a wide range of ionization stages (NIII, OVI, SiIII, CIII, SIII, IV, VI in addition to optical data) with the aim to obtain Halo and disk abundances. A further aim is to extend our knowledge of the chromatic effect of the probably microlensed component in A to rest wavelengths Lambda > 740 Angstrom.
