High-quality images of NGC 55, M33, and M81 at 24, 70, and 160 microns have been obtained with MIPS. These galaxies are very nearby (1 to 4 Mpc) and the physical resolution of the images is relatively high, 30 to 120 pc at 24 microns up to 200 to 800 pc at 160 microns. They are representative of the highest spatial resolution that will be obtained on galaxies by Spitzer. Therefore, they provide a unique opportunity to examine the morphology of the galaxies in the far infrared and to compare it with that at other wavelengths. We will use the images to test hypotheses for the heating sources for the dust in the galaxies, and to refine our understanding of the correspondence of far infrared luminosity with recent star formation.
