We will be investigating the newly-discovered comet Hale-Bopp [which is officially known as Comet C/1995 O1 {Hale-Bopp}]. This is an 11-orbit program using the WFPC-2, the FOS, and the GHRS. The first 7 orbits will be executed in October 1995 when the comet is 6.5 AU from both the Sun and Earth. The imaging will be used to measure ephemeris corrections, to place constraints on the nuclear size, and to investigate the near-nucleus coma morphology. The spectra will cover the entire wavelength range from 1295 A to 3300 A and will be used to provide sensitive searches for any molecular, atomic, and ionic emissions. After the first 7 orbits are completed, we will make a final decision on the strategy for the remaining 4 orbits. This comet presents an opportunity for observations over a large range of heliocentric distances, which is a unique occurrence since HST was launched in 1990.
