IBIS, the INTEGRAL gamma-ray telescope designed to produce high-resolution images (12') over a wide field of view, covers the energy range 15 keV - 10 MeV. Its high sensitivity (mCrab level) and accurate timing (0.1 ms) are particularly well adapted to the study of the galactic and extragalactic accretion powered sources. Weekly scans of the galactic disc will allow for the detection of transient sources (e.g. X-ray novae) that may be considered as targets of opportunity. The spectral performance of IBIS (10% at 60 keV) will allow for the study of line emission from supernova remnants (44Ti), pulsars (cyclotron lines) and X-ray novae. The wide field of view will permit the detection of many serendipitous sources such as AGNs and gamma-ray bursts. The polarimetric capabilities of the telescope may also give new insights into the gamma-ray burst phenomenon.
