The Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) provides far infrared capability for the mission with fixed imaging bands at 24, 70, and 160 microns and a low resolution spectral energy distribution mode providing spectral resolution of about 7% between 52 and 100 microns. For the first time, it combines high sensitivity far infrared arrays with critical sampling of the telescope point spread function for substantial advances in angular resolution, imaging and surveying efficiency, and detection of faint sources. We will illustrate the performance of this instrument on orbit with samples of the early science observations. We will also show unique aspects of the approach taken in the reduction of the far infrared data.
