HI 21 cm absorption spectroscopy of damped Lyman-α systems (DLAs) towards radio-loud background sources provides an interesting probe of the nature of the absorbing galaxies, yielding information on their ISM conditions, kinematics and spatial extent. In this article, I will describe our recent results from such HI 21 cm absorption studies, before discussing prospects for the field with upcoming instruments like ASKAP and the EVLA.
