During October/November 2003, the dramatic active region 0486 traversed the solar disk and produced many large solar flares. During this time, we obtained chromspheric vector magnetic field data for AR0486 using the Imaging Vector Magnetograph (IVM) at Mees Solar Observatory, Haleakala, Hawaii. We will describe these vector field data and will use them to compute the magnetic free energy, and its time variation, for AR0486. This large, complex active region contained an unusually large amount of free magnetic energy, not surprising considering the level of activity it produced.
This work was supported by NASA grant NAG5-12466.
