Dark Matter, Gravitational Lenses And Luminous Arcs
Scientific paper
The high surface density of faint blue galaxies at high redshift, selected by their low surface brightness, have become unique tools in mapping the projected mass distribution of foreground mass concentrations. The systematic gravitational lens distortions of thousands of these background galaxies in 10-arcmin fields reveal for the first time detailed mass profiles for intervening clusters of galaxies. Mass in the rich cluster A1689 follows smoothed light, outside a core region, with a rest-frame V band mass-to-light ratio of 400+/-60 h (M/L)solar. Out to radius of 1 h-1 Mpc there is evidence for a steeper than isothermal falloff. These techniques are applied to a sample of 28 clusters of galaxies and trends among their mass, light, and X-ray properties are reviewed.
