A strategy is presented to mitigate the escalating deterioration of the biosphere as a result of the exponential increase in population. This strategy is based on the use of extraterrestrial materials resources available in the solar system by obtaining power from space for use on earth to supply the energy demands of a civilization that would not have to rely exclusively on terrestrial energy sources. A growth path for the solar power satellite is presented that can achieve definable values at various stage of technology readiness. Near-term activities along this growth path are indicated and coordinated development projects are advocated to meet the challenges facing humanity.
