The X-ray Multi-Mirro (XMM) observatory will consist of a high throughput X-ray facility coupled to dispersive and non-dispersive imaging spectrometers. With the capability for simultaneous medium and high dispersion X-ray spectroscopy at a spatial resolution of less than 30 arc seconds, complemented by simultaneous, onboard optical and UV monitoring, XMM will be a powerful general user facility. The Observatory will be placed in a deep eccentric orbit allowing for sensitive, long, uninterrupted observations of a wide variety of targets ranging from nearby stars to distant quasars.
