Supernovae: Individual: Sn 1897A
Scientific paper
Spatially resolved profiles of the [O 111]5007 A emission line have been obtained from the three elliptically shaped rings of ionized gas surrounding SN 1987A. The morphology and kinematics of these phenomena are consistent with a model in which two toroidal, circular rings are travelling at <25km/s in opposite directions along the surfaces of a bi-polar cone centred on SN 1987A. The third, central ring is again in the form of a torus but expanding radially at 8.3km/s in a plane perpendicular to the common axis of the cones. All the ring structures must have been created 23x10^4^yrs prior to the explosion and are manifestations of the circumstellar environment of the progenitor star in the final stages of its non-catastrophic evolution.
