Interplanetary Medium, Planets: Jupiter

Scientific paper

This paper uses obsevations made with the SWICS instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft to put an upper limit on the strength of Jupiter as a source of oxygen atoms in the heliosphere. If k is the factor which has been used to describe the asymmetrical emission of neutrals from the planet, then our result is that, at this epoch, the upper bound for kQ is <10x10^28^/s, consistent with the estimate of Barbossa and Eviatar, 1986. Since values of k of 3-5 are likely, this leads to the conclusion that Jupiter is a relatively modest source of oxygen in the inner heliosphere when compared to the interstellar medium.
