Using a highly accurate numerical method developed specifically for this problem the violent hydrodynamics of interacting stellar winds (ISW) of planetary nebulae (PNe) are investigated. These models include a full treatment of the radiation transfer, ionization, and radiative heating and cooling. Our results display a rich variety of features which confirm and surpass previously published models. In one dimension we performed a number of simulations which take account of the evolution of the central star and its affect on the dynamics of the nebulae. 'Theoretical observations' of the model PN are calculated. These synthetic intensity profiles, kinematics and line ratios are then compared with real observations. In two dimensions we present model results which demonstrate that the interacting wind scenario can account for the wide range of observed morphologies. By projecting a spherically symmetric fast into a toroidal slow wind the range of elliptical, bipolar and peanut shaped PN can be recovered. Consideration of ionization effects and projection effects further strengthen the case for the ISW models ability to account for the observed properties of PNe.
