The rotation period of HD77581, supergiant primary in the X-ray binary Vela X-1, is determined from an analysis of selected absorption line profiles. The rotation rate determined from HeI line profiles is 0.67+/-0.04 times that of the binary angular velocity, corresponding to a rotation velocity v_eq_sin i = 116+/-6km/s and a rotation period of about 13.5 days.
