We present new optical B, V, R observations of the white dwarf companion
to the pulsar PSR 0820 + 02. These observations indicate that the white
dwarf and hence the pulsar are much older than assumed previously,
probably as old as 2 x 10 exp 8 yr. This implies that magnetic fields as
high as 3 x 10 exp 11 G can exist in relatively old pulsars.
