Recent geological and paleomagnetic data suggest that plate tectonics may have been an important factor shaping the surface of the earth as far back as the Proterozoic Eon 1.6 billion years ago. The physical evidence for an extension of plate tectonics to the Proterozoic Eon is discussed, with emphasis given to: (1) the subduction of wet ocean crust at the intersection of Proterozoic cratons; (2) the collisional nature of the Penokean orogen (the Great Lakes Crustal Addition); and (3) the presence of orogens due to collisions between the North American continent and outlying island arcs. A map showing the cratons and orogens of the North American continent is provided.
