The paper describes astrometric observations used in first mass determinations of Ceres, Pallas, and Vesta, with special attention given to the astrometric method of Hoffmann (1989) and the Hertz's (1966, 1968) collection of accurate positions of (197) Arete. These positions were used to test the validity of the respective mass determinations. Systematic effects of brightness on the calculated positions of Pallas are considered.
