Hasan & Sobouti (1987) treated the wave propagation in a uniform magnetic flux tube based on the vector and the scalar potentials, generating a velocity field in the fluid. The present investigation is the generalization of this analysis, considering the effect of a tapered field on the modal structure in the tube. Let eta parametrize the deviation of the magnetic field from uniformity. Assuming that the field is only weakly tapered, so that eta is small, we present expressions giving contributions to the energy integrals due to the effect of nonuniformity. The most pronounced feature due to this effect is the coupling of the Alfven modes to the remaining modes. This infinitesimal coupling is present only for nonaxisymmetric modes. For simplicity, first we consider an unstratified medium and derive analytical expressions for giving the frequency shift in terms of eta. Next, we consider polytropes of different indices and examine how the diagnostic diagram is modified for different values of eta.
