We took spectra along the innermost 10 arcsec of the anomalous arms in the nearby galaxy NGC 4258. The steepest observed velocity gradient corresponds to a Keplerian mass of only 17 x 10 exp 6 solar masses within R less than 32 pc. The line ratios within 5-arcsec distance from the nucleus are in agreement with ionization by a central low-luminosity power-law source. Its invisibility in the UV calls for strong obscuration along our line of sight. The kinematical data confirm that the active nucleus may be hidden. Fitting the central line profiles with Lorentzians instead with Gaussians avoids the need of a broad H-alpha component in the apparent brightness center. The invisibility of blue stars on old plates is explainable by the faintness of the stars.
