Models which describe continental evolution are proposed. The steady-state hypothesis, which states that the continental crust was developed by about 4000 million yr ago and was recycled through the mantle without any net change of crustal mass, and the continental crustal growth hypothesis, which dates the earliest continental crust at about 3700 million years occurring by progressive and irreversible chemical differentiation of the upper mantle, are analyzed. Isotopic large-scale modelling which places constraints on the hypotheses is described. The use of radiogenic isotopes to date early Precambrian continental crust and the U-Pb dating of detrital and xenolithic zircons, Sm-Nd model-age dating, and Pb/Pb methods for dating of igneous, metamorphoric, or sedimentary rocks are discussed.
