A ratchet was developed for photopolarimeter filters, apertures, and polarizers for operation at cryogenic temperatures. It allows accurate discrete positioning in space applications. Hall probes used for position recognition were studied as regards sensitivity, reproducibility, and reliability. Point contacts for filter and aperture wheel, and cooling in liquid helium were tested, to achieve high sensitivity and photometric accuracy of the photopolarimeter and to protect it against thermal interference radiation. Capacitors, displacement transducers, photodetectors, and light emitting diodes were tested for application at low temperatures. These mechanical and electrical components can be integrated in the GIRL photopolarimeter consisting of 2 identical photometers covering the 3 to 30 and 30 to 200 micron ranges to be applied in cryovacuum.
