A new investigation into the evolution with cosmological epoch of the luminosity function for extragalactic radio sources is presented. The free-form technique of Peacock and Gull (1981) is applied to an increased data base of complete samples and number counts, with improved statistical methods, resulting in an important reduction of the uncertainties in the derived luminosity functions. The present data require a redshift cutoff for the class of compact flat spectrum sources, but no such statement can yet be made for the radio source population as a whole. Experiments to resolve this uncertainty are discussed, and it is suggested that surveys only a factor of about 10 deeper than existing complete samples will contain substantial fractions of high-redshift objects, unless the redshift limit for compact flat spectrum sources is a general one. The physical implications of a redshift cutoff are discussed.
