Earth-based radio astronomy is a useful tool that often tells us things that we can't find out any other way. The article is a primer on the history of radar and its uses on Earth as well as in astronomy. The Astronomical Unit (AU) was finally determined using radar. Radar studies of the moon, planets, and asteroids have revealed information not previously known.
