Missing from the standard introductory astronomy course is the essential “story line” that tells how astronomers came to know so much about the universe. Without such context, students find it hard to engage with the presentation of scientific principles and knowledge, no matter how logically organized. Through a series of in-class, modestly mathematical, paper-and-pencil activities, coupled with brief lectures and available online simulations, non-science students can recapitulate the epic advancement of astronomical thought, from the rudimentary observations of prehistoric skywatchers to the development of modern astrophysics. Examples of the activities are presented. The new approach was implemented during the Fall 2006 semester in the introductory astronomy course at UMass Dartmouth, to a total of 250 students. As structured, the course can serve both as a stand-alone, one-semester introduction to science and an effective lead-in to a “standard” introductory astronomy course.
