In addition to dictating the evolutionary time scale, stellar winds from red giant stars are thought to be important in the enrichment of heavy elements in the ISM. Observations of circumstellar CO are used to determine stellar mass-loss rates and circumstellar envelope properties. We have indications for M-stars, using e.g. ATCA data, that observations of circumstellar SiO are very interesting because it is potentially a useful probe of the formation and evolution of dust grains in circumstellar envelopes, as well as their dynamics. We propose here to observe 4 red giants of a different chemical composition, 2 carbon stars and 2 S-stars.
