Astronomical uses of mass spectrometers and gas chromatographs are reviewed. Mass spectrometers were employed to measure the chemical composition of the atmospheres of Mars and Venus, and a mass spectrometer is part of the Galileo mission to Jupiter. Gas chromatographs were used successfully on the Pioneer Venus mission and on the Venera 11 and 12 missions. The only gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer combination ever flown in a planetary mission was on the Viking Lander. A gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer system which alternatively takes atmospheric gas samples directly into the mass spectrometer, or indirectly through a chromatographic column, or an aerosol pyrolyzer, is proposed for the analysis of the atmosphere of Titan using an entry probe.
