Surface composition of Saturn's satellites (except Titan) as revealed by Earth based telescopes is discussed. Most of the satellites are icy objects with nearly pure frozen water on their surfaces. Notable exceptions are the dark hemisphere of Iapetus and the captured object Phoebe. Small amounts of nonwater contaminants may occur in the surface ices of several of the larger satellites, and Hyperion may contain a large amount of contaminant. Many unresolved questions about the nature of the Saturn satellite system remain for in situ studies by an orbiting spacecraft.
