We have been awarded 456 ks in X-rays with RXTE, to observe the neutron star X-ray binary 4U 1820-30 during its hard-X-ray/radio-active state. We request three radio simultaneous observations: (i) when the source enters the hard state, (ii) when it is deep in the hard state (iii) before leaving the hard state. We will study: 1) the radio flux vs. the X-ray flux: important for comparison with the BHs in order to determine the nature of the accretion flow (radiatively efficient/inefficient) and to constrain theoretical advection models. 2) study of the radio spectrum slope as a function of the X-ray flux to constrain compact jets models. 3) study of all the single X-ray parameters (spectral and temporal) with respect to changes in the radio flux density and radio spectral index, to find the best accretion rate proxy 4) we will finally have the radio coverage of a complete accretion cycle in a neutron star, from soft to hard states.
