It is still not known whether massive stars form through accretion like low-mass stars. However, linearly distributed methanol masers have been suggested to exist in and to trace circumstellar accretion disks around massive stars (e.g. Norris et al. 1993). De Buizer (2003) attempted to verify the maser-disk hypothesis by mapping outflows in near-infrared H_2 emission, expecting that the outflows would be perpendicular to the accretion disks traced by the methanol masers. Instead, it was discovered that the axis of H_2 emission was often parallel to the line of masers, inspiring the competing hypothesis that the methanol masers are excited in bipolar outflows from accretion disks around the massive stars. However, since H_2 can be excited by other means than outflow shocks, we propose to test these competing maser hypotheses (and in so doing test the accretion hypothesis for massive star formation) by mapping the outflows from a sample of these maser sources in the SiO (2-1) line using the ATCA.
