The Astronomical Group of the Joint Eclipse Expedition of Beijing Observatory, Purple Mountain Observatory and Nanjing Astronomical Instrument Factory successfully carried out the following optical observations during the total solar eclipse of 1983 June 11, in Papua New Guinea: (1) spectra of the chromosphere and corona in the 3600 -6600A range, with an average dispersion of 6.4 A/mm and a height resolution of about 110km; (2) Wide-band photometry and polarization of the corona; (3) colour photography through the entire eclipse. This paper gives a brief description of the instruments, the observing methods and the results obtained.
