The authors present the first monochromatic images of a solar flare in the λ4686 line of He II. The observations were obtained in the intense (X10) flare 1984 May 20. The emission comes from footpoint kernels with peak intensity 3.3 times the photosphere. This value is about twice that recorded by spectroscopic observers and far exceeds most published data for the intensity of the resonance line λ304 and the Balmer α1640 of He II. The authors calculate the intensities of the He II lines for a range of temperature and electron density. Satisfactory agreement for the line intensities of the various lines is obtained for high densities of the order of 1012.5 - 1013.0cm-3, which would imply these emissions originate in the deep chromosphere.
