The survival probability in the solar system of the grains ejected from a parent comet is examined after integration of dust production rate along the orbit of the parent comet, using a size distribution depending on the ratio of the solar radiation plus solar wind repulsion to the solar gravitational attraction on the grain. A lack of submicron-sized grains is found among the grains which can take bound orbits, especially for metallic grains. In addition, the possibility of the existence of very small grains with radii less than 0.1 μm on bound orbits in the interplanetary space is suggested. Such grains arise from heterogeneous icy grains due to dissipation of the host icy components under sublimation. It is emphasized, furthermore, that the motion of such a small grain is strongly influenced by electromagnetic perturbations in contrast to larger grains where the Poynting-Robertson effect and the mutual collisional effects dominate.
