The low-background spectral region between OH lines in the near infrared and large-area synoptic surveys are two key regimes in which present and future large ground-based telescopes will excel at seeking first-light sources. We will describe the hunt for high-redshift galaxies from the ground, focusing on near-term surveys planned with 8-10 m telescopes and longer-term possibilities with the next generation of extremely large telescopes. We will also discuss progress on the search for high-redshift supernovae from deep time-domain surveys.
