We discuss the properties of HD49798/RXJ0648.0-4418 the only known X-ray binary composed by a hot sub-dwarf and an X-ray pulsar. We recently found evidence that the pulsations are due to a very massive (1.28 Msolar), fast rotating (13 s) white dwarf. The future evolution of this post common envelope binary will involve a new phase of mass accretion through Roche-lobe overflow that could drive the white dwarf above the Chandrasekhar limit and produce a Type Ia supernova explosion or a millisecond pulsar.
