Comparison of the chemical compositions of structurally unaltered Upper Pleistocene gastropod shells with recent specimens of the same species demonstrates that diagenetic alteration has occurred to differing extents in the ancient material. A thermodynamic interpretation of these changes is given, and a practical criterion developed for establishing the presence of such alteration in any fossil assemblage. The extent of chemical alteration occurring in the absence of recrystallization may well be temperature controlled, and eventually criteria may be developed that will be exclusive functions of this environmental variable.
