The in-orbit ageing of thermo-optical properties of thermal control coatings is of great interest since they are damaged by the space environment. CNES has developed a simple and low cost experiment called THERME to evaluate the in-flight measurement of the ageing of thermal control coatings by following the evolution of solar absorptivity by measuring the temperature. The principle of THERME is described in this poster and some examples of temperature and solar absorptivity are given. Today, the THERME experiment has demonstrated the effect of atomic oxygen on thermal control coatings on SPOT satellites (about 800km). We want to promote THERME on new satellites and on GEOstationary, Low Earth Orbit or future Medium Earth Orbits with new coatings. We expect THERME to help to decrease the design margins for thermal control of satellites.
