Solar Prominences: Magnetohydrodynamics
Scientific paper
Quiescent prominences are modeled as a sequence of slender static flux tubes arranged behind each other and embedded in an isothermal corona. A simplified energy equilibrium leads to a polytropic relation for the prominence plasma and solutions can be described almost analytically. Using the full energy equilibrium requires a numerical solution of the equations. Numerical values of key physical quantities like temperature, density and magnetic field are well within observed ranges. The solutions are analyzed with respect to their dynamical and thermal stability by means of both local analysis and global normal mode analysis as an eigenvalue problem.
