During the production of the Henry Draper Catalog, Wilhemina Fleming identified several M-type stars with unusually strong hydrogen emission lines. Paul Merrill obtained higher quality spectra of these `stars with combination spectra' and found intense emission from He II or [O III] and [Ne III] in addition to H I.
