The metal abundance of five globular clusters (47 Tucanae, M5, M4, NGC 6752 and M71) has been derived from new high dispersion spectra obtained with the CASPEC spectrograph and compared with analogous material for α Bootis. A new metallicity scale for metal-rich globular clusters is proposed. On this scale, M71 and 47 Tuc have [Fe/H] = -0.8, while the M5 metallicity is at [Fe/H] = -1.4. This confirms the most recent attempts to derive a metallicity scale for metal-rich globular clusters. A brief review of the consequences of the presently proposed metallicity scale on age derivation and on the interpretation of the horizontal branch parameters is made.
