An axisymmetric model of the circumstellar envelope is proposed with the latitude dependence of the stellar wind density, which is concentrated near the equatorial plane. This model is shown to explain the observational variations of the emission-line profiles in the spectrum of the B9-AOe Herbig star AB Aur, when P Cyg-type profiles are converted into symmetric ones with sharp tops. This variability is proposed to be connected with the envelope structure transformation, when the equatorial outflow increases and the latitude density distribution becomes exponential. The physical and kinematical parameters of the proposed envelope model are discussed. The mass loss rate for AB Aur is estimated and the interval of its variations is 2 x 10 exp -8 to 1.3 x 10 exp -7 solar mass/year.
