It is suggested that the excess of elements in the 5th and 6th periods
of the periodic table in S and some C stars is due to the decay of
superdense prestellar matter. Arguments are brought forward to suggest
that the anomalies of the chemical composition and the flares observed
in the surface regions of stars have a common origin.
