The dependence of the ionization structure of gaseous nebulae on stellar and nebular parameters was investigated in order to find diagnostic aids for interpreting the spectra of planetary nebulae and HII regions. For ionization-bounded, homogeneous nebulae without a large central hole, illuminated by a blackbody central star, it is possible to give the ratio of the volume where a specific ion is abundant to that of the H(+) or He(++) zone as a function of only two parameters: the stellar temperature, and a combination involving stellar radius and nebula density. Results of detailed numerical model calculations for the ions of C, N, O, Ne, and S are presented.
