It is shown that the 'photosphere' of an early-type (super)giant component of a massive X-ray binary system may still be several density scale heights inside its critical lobe, while the mass transfer from the overflowing atmospheric layers powers the bright X-ray source. Calculations of atmospheric Roche-lobe overflow from massive (16 to 32 solar masses) core hydrogen-burning stars onto compact companions of 1 solar mass show that Roche-lobe overflow can give rise to relatively long-lived (10,000 to 100,000 yr) strong X-ray sources.
